Times have changed, though, and this new generation of parents are very familiar with GPS’ and geo-fencing…mostly because it was a cool function that we found on our smartphones or when we lost the ability to read actual maps and started relying on car GPS systems. However, there still may be some people out there who are confused with what geo-fencing actually is and how does it work.
In this post, we will tell you what is Geofencing and how does Geofencing work as well as how to use it to keep your children safe.
Geofencing is another bit of technology which you, as a parent, may find rather useful. It’s not in very common usage yet; but it does use the ubiquitous GPS and/or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification –Bluetooth, wifi, etc.) as part of its technology.
Geofences are imaginary boundaries that can be set up in location-aware applications, allowing users to trigger notifications or other actions when someone with a location-aware device that is being tracked, enters or leaves the predetermined area that was established within the location-aware app.
A geofence is most commonly defined within the code of a mobile application, especially since users need to opt-in to location services for the geofence to work. If you go to a concert venue, they might have an app you can download that will deliver information about the event. Or, a retailer might draw a geofence around its outlets to trigger mobile alerts for customers who have downloaded the retailer’s mobile app. In these cases, a geofence that is managed by the retailer is programmed into the app, and users can opt to decline location access for the app.
Geofencing can be used in many different ways. Coffee shops could trigger geofenced push notifications when users are downtown and in need of some pre-work caffeine. A wedding planner could set up a geofenced push notification around bridal stores and bakeries, offering helpful shopping tips or highlighting the best deals for users.
